A Perfect Day In Balboa Park

It was a perfect day in Balboa Park.

A trip to Balboa Park is a must for any visitor to San Diego.  We spend much of our free time in Balboa Park.  There are 17 different museums to visit as well as the world famous San Diego zoo.  You can maybe catch an organ concert at Spreckles Pavilion, a play at the Globe Theatre, or a performance by the San Diego Youth Ballet.  Often local artists will be showing their latest creations in the artists village.  Most days you can see a variety of musicians and other performers throughout the park.  There is a rose garden and a cactus garden, as well as miles and miles of hiking trails.  Brick and I have barely even begun to explore the park, despite multiple visits.

Sunday, April 10 Brick and I decided to head to Balboa Park to enjoy the beautiful weather with our dog, Primerra.  We walked along the path by Spreckles pavillion and headed to the bike rental shop near the zoo to put air in the tires of Primerra’s stroller.  Here you can rent a variety of bicycles, kid trailers, and surreys to explore the park.  We then walked the bridge over park avenue to enjoy the rose garden, the roses are in full bloom.  The colors are vibrant and varied.  Everything from red, yellow and pink to lavender and blue.  There is even a gazebo under which you can have a picnic lunch.

After strolling the garden for a while and enjoying the sun, we decided that it was time for a cocktail and headed back to the main area.  There are numerous places to grab a bite while in the park.  There are hot dog and popcorn carts, a snack shack next to the bicycle rental shop, the Japanese tea house, a couple of places inside the various museums, and more.  If you are looking to sit down and have a meal with a beer, wine, or cocktail the two places that I know of are the Prada and Panama66.

We have never been to the Prada–we hear it is nice.  Panama66 is more casual, and you can enjoy the statue garden while there.  The food and drinks are all reasonably priced–$7 for a San Diego craft beer, $7-10 for a glass of wine, and $10-12 hand crafted and unique cocktails that I highly suggest you try one of.

There is much more to the park than what we have described here, and much much more to see and do in San Diego.  We will continue to post more local adventures of the amazing city and state in which we live.
