Our wreck dive was slated for the Yukon and the RubyE, but due to the number of boats in a holding pattern to tie up for the RubyE we made our second site an observation tower that was toppled in a storm a few years earlier. With this dive done we’re confident that the dives in Hawaii will go well.
Once we got parked and our gear unloaded we checked in with Waterhorse Charters and then headed down to the boat. Fortunately we were early enough that we could start getting geared up while still on the dock. We discovered that here in southern California the water in the Pacific ocean is surprisingly cold, thus requiring 7mm wet suits at the least for us. So if you have the chance to start getting into your wetsuit while still on the dock or dry land it’s always a good idea.
Luckily the ocean was calm on the way out to the wreck dive site that we were headed to. Sadly I still was battling motion sickness despite how calm the water was that morning.
I was surprised that it was only about a 15 minute boat ride out to the wreck dive site that morning. The last time I was on a boat dive it was closer to 3 hours to the dive site. After having a quick hot cocoa and a bite of pastry that was available in the galley we finished getting suited up and ready to hop in the water to dive the Yukon.
While everyone had standard dive gear this one guy went in with no gear whatsoever. During the dive we saw him zip tied to the Yukon next to the mooring line. I wonder if his buddy standing next to him ever went back to get him after halloween was over.
While we didn’t bring the underwater camera with us we had several good pictures from the boat and crew as well as the ride out and back in.
While we were out on the dive sites we could see the marine layer coming in from out in the Pacific Ocean. It was quite a sight to see to witness a wall of white cloud rolling toward you while on the open ocean.
We were so glad to get back to a hot lunch on shore after our 3 wreck dives and to get warm in the sun that was shining as it does pretty much year round in sunny San Diego.
