A quick walk around the Lake Poway Loop Trail
I met Brick for lunch and had a couple of hours to kill prior to our weekly Weight Watchers meeting (we are both lifetime members and would be happy to share our experiences, tips, recipes, etc with you–contact us). I had never hiked the Lake Poway Loop before and decided this was a good expenditure of time at a location near to our meeting. It was a cool & partly cloudy day, with just the right amount of wind–a perfect day to be active outdoors.
The 2.5 mile loop is an easy, wide, dirt trail, with some rather steep inclines. It is very well maintained, with several bathroom stations along the way.
I chose to walk counter-clockwise around the lake and completed the loop right at an hour, walking at a leisurely pace and stopping to take pictures.
Along the way I had many views of the Lake Poway from the trail. I could hear lizards scampering in the brush–I even was lucky enough to get a picture of one! Usually, they scamper out of frame way too fast for me.
There are a few side trails accessible from the loop–I will save those for another day. Along the way the views were mostly of the lake and the rocky hills surrounding it. I had expected that the trail would continue across the spillway, but it did not. Instead, the trail took me behind the spillway into a rustic wilderness area. This is one of the reasons why I fell in love with San Diego; there are many parks and refuges accessible where you can be in the wilderness, away from civilization, while at the same time only a few minutes drive from the large metropolis. I just love having outdoor treasures like this right here in our own backyard.
