Our Sunday Potrero CA. ride.
What better way to spend part of a weekend than taking a ride through the southern California desert. A short piece about our Potrero CA. ride.
A favorite pass time of ours is to see the beautiful countryside in and around San Diego. We decided to head East toward Potrero CA. as we love the desert and the landscape that it offers.
Where some people see a dry, arid, desolate landscape we see natural beauty that seems to have been unaltered for decades. There is a surprisingly large amount of vegetation here and most of is is green and what I would call “lush” for such a hot and sunny location. The roads are often lined with trees and large shrubs that require lots of water to survive, so there’s got to be a water table out here.
Highway CA 94 that goes from San Diego out toward Potrero offers some great riding, there are a few straightaways that offer you a chance to really open up the throttle. They are not very long so you can’t get going too fast but they are fun for a short time. The ever changing scenery in the southern California desert is simply beautiful with the relatively flat desert yielding to hills and escarpments in the distance.
Past Potrero CA. we turned around in Campo CA. after getting gas and a drink while stopping to stretch our legs. We did check out the camping in Potrero while we were there. There is quite a large campground in Potrero CA. at the Potrero County Park. The roads are well kept, some are dirt and some are paved. There is water and ample shade at the sites which is great for the heat of the day when you need to take it easy before your afternoon/early evening hike.
After we left the park we wound our way through the desert and mountains that dot the landscape. Much of the landscape is definitely desert with small patches of more lush vegetation. It’s truly an interesting ecosystem.
Again a quick stop to stretch the legs and walk around for a few minutes before we stopped for lunch on the road.
No motorcycle ride in CA. is complete without a stop at a taco stand!
Continuing our ride after scoping out Potrero CA., the surrounding area and camping options we decided to head back toward San Diego. But on the way we had to stop in Dulzura CA. at the Dulzura Mini Market. This little place has some awesome fresh grilled tacos from a wood fired grill out front. Half of the grill is wood fired and the other half is propane. They cook the meat on the wood fired side and it’s quite good. I highly recommend stopping here if you are out in the neighborhood.
Consequently we have made this ride more than once and seem to never get tired of it. Below is a longer video of segments of our ride this day, and stopping at the Dulzura Mini Market.
